Amy Horvey

Amy Horvey is a Montreal-based trumpet player whose work bridges contemporary and traditional practices. She has been praised for her "outstandingly eminent know-how, her timbre a thing of beauty – control and restraint mixed with eloquent intensity." (Massimo Ricci, Temporary Fault).

A champion of Canadian contemporary music, she has commissioned works by Nicole Lizée, Cassandra Miller, and Keiko Devaux, among many others. She has recorded two solo albums –Interview and Catchment. Her solo projects have been featured in festivals across Canada, and in the Netherlands, Lithuania, Italy, and the US. Amy has performed with the Nouvel Ensemble Moderne, Arraymusic, Lucerne Festival Academy, and others.

On the orchestral stage, Amy has appeared as a soloist with the Orchestre symphonique de Montréal and the National Arts Center Orchestra. She has toured and performed for over a decade with the OSM and has been Acting Principal Trumpet of the Canadian Opera Company for numerous productions. She has worked with many groups including the National Arts Center Orchestra, Toronto Symphony Orchestra, Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra, Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, Victoria Symphony Orchestra, l’Orchestre Métropolitan, and the Thunder Bay Symphony Orchestra.

Her research and experimentation with early instruments resulted in performances with Arion Baroque Orchestra, Ensemble Caprice, Studio de musique ancienne de Montréal, and Les Violons du Roy. Her playing can be heard on the Arion Baroque Orchestra’s Juno-nominated Bach: Magnificat BWV 243 (Atma Classique), and many Orchestre symphonique de Montréal recordings.

She has taught trumpet performance at numerous institutions, including McGill, Concordia, and Lakehead Universities. Her solo projects have been supported by the National Arts Centre’s Richard Li Young Artist Chair, the Canada Council for the Arts, the Saskatchewan Arts Board, and the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec.

Amy holds a Doctorate of Music in Trumpet Performance from McGill University, completed under the guidance of Edward Carroll with the support of the Graduate Scholarship from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC). She completed her 2nd phase diploma at the Rotterdams Conservatory and Dance Academy in the Netherlands with Andre Heuvelman, and the first year of the Artist Diploma in Orchestral Studies from the Glenn Gould School of the Royal Conservatory of Music with Andrew McCandless. She holds a Bachelor of Music degree in Trumpet Performance from the University of Victoria with Louis Ranger. While growing up in small town Saskatchewan she studied with Miles Newman.
