Ever since 2002, Buzz, the Montreal brass quintet founded by Sylvain Lapointe, has performed extensively from coast to coast in the United States and in Canada. Buzz has grown into a unique phenomenon, a winning mix of exceptional musical performance and creative theatrical staging that delights audiences everywhere, every time. From classical to traditional music and jazz Buzz knows how to strike the right chord in young audiences shows, chamber music concerts and award-winning recordings.
The ensemble is a merry gang of musicians who has been on the same wavelength since the beginning:
Sylvain Lapointe – artistic director / trumpet
Frédéric Gagnon – principal trumpet
Pascal Lafrenière – horn
Jason De Carufel – trombone
Sylvain Arseneau – bass trombone
Throughout the years, the fabulous five have enjoyed success without ever taking themselves too seriously. Buzz has given over 900 performances on two continents, in primary and secondary schools as well as renowned venues and halls such as the Louvre Museum in Paris. The ensemble has attracted a total of some 175,000 spectators. It has performed in several radio and television broadcasts. Buzz is also a hit with journalists and the ensemble’s three albums have been critically acclaimed. Their most recent recording was nominated for one of Quebec’s ADISQ awards, and the show, The History music, earned Buzz an OPUS Prize nomination (ahead of the renowned Orchestresymphonique de Montréal) as well as the status of Finalist at the Young Audiences Music Awards 2012 organized by Jeunesses Musicales Internationales.
In January 2014, Buzz was awarded the OPUS Prize for its 10th anniversary concert, in the multiple repertoire category. A perfect reward for talented musicians whose command of music charms, amazes and bedazzles in all styles and forms.
“There is both skill and imagination here, and in abundance. Brilliant, exciting, yet always controlled playing. The brass players all get gold stars.”
