An Important Message in Support of the Petition to Stop Music Program Cuts in the Toronto District School Board
When children engage with music — actively play or study — their cognitive skills are strengthened. This has been demonstrated in repeated studies, including those conducted right here in Toronto at the world-renowned Rotman Research Institute and Centre for Brain Fitness by Dr. Sylvain Moreno and his brilliant team.
No single area of study has proven to better activate multiple areas of the brain as efficiently as music. As Dr. Moreno so eloquently posits, “music is the all-in-one workout machine in the weight room of your kid’s brain.” Yet, music education is being systematically eliminated from our schools.
The Toronto District School Board is proposing serious cuts for 2013-2014 programs being offered in Elementary Schools. For many families the cognitive benefits of making music are only available to them through the school board; kids whose parents can’t afford lessons will be done a tremendous disservice by these cuts.
Yamaha Canada Music is proud to advocate on behalf of music education and work to ensure that every child has the chance to make music.
