Concert to Benefit the Street Haven Choir

The Toronto Choral Society is proud to join its sister choir, the Street Haven Women’s Choir, to present A New Day, a concert to benefit the the Street Haven choir. The concert will celebrate the joy of singing with an eclectic selection of works from the repertoire of both groups. The choirs will perform separately and together under the baton of Geoffrey Butler, the conductor and artistic director of both organizations.

The Toronto Choral Society has been a part of Toronto since the choir was founded in 1845. In 2000, its artistic director Geoff Butler began the Street Haven Women’s Choir for women who use the services of Street Haven as well as staff and friends. Every week, at the Street Haven shelter, the choir learns music ranging from Mozart to modern folk songs.

"I've been a musician all my life, but I continue to be profoundly moved by the sense of pride and accomplishment that the women of Street Haven gain from singing," said Butler. "Just as with the Choral Society, music offers them a sense of community and satisfaction that transcends day-to-day cares and artificial social barriers. We can meet as equals in music."

Yamaha Canada is proud to support this important organization with the donation of a P95 digital piano and stand, which will be used in performance for the first time at this concert which takes place on Sunday, April 29, 2012, at 2:00 p.m. at St. Paul’s Basilica, 60 Power Street, Toronto (corner of Queen Street, east of Parliament). There is no charge for admission, but donations will be gratefully accepted at the door, and receipts will be provided for donations over $20.

Street Haven is a multi-faceted organization located in downtown Toronto, serving women through emergency shelter beds, addiction services, a learning centre, and supportive housing. To learn more about the choir, find out how you can support it, or arrange for a performance, visit the Street Haven Women’s Choir page on the TCS website or call 416-410-3509.
