MEET ANGELA SCHROEDER

Dr. Angela Schroeder is currently Professor of Music in the Department of Music at the University of Alberta. She is the Director of Bands, the Director of Undergraduate Programs, and conducts the Symphonic Wind Ensemble and Summer Band. Angela was awarded the 2016 Faculty of Arts Award for Undergraduate Teaching and the 2017 Rutherford Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching by the University of Alberta. She teaches courses in conducting and music education, and works with Graduate students in instrumental conducting. Angela is also the conductor of the St. Albert Community Band, an ensemble that is currently in their 56th concert season. She led the ensemble on their first European tour in July 2015, performing in Germany and at the MidEurope Band and Orchestra Festival in Schladming, Austria.

Angela completed undergraduate studies in Music at the University of Calgary, majoring in Secondary Education, with performance studies in piano and trumpet. After teaching in the Calgary public schools, she entered the Master's program in Wind Conducting at Northwestern University, where she studied with Mallory Thompson and earned the Master of Music in Conducting in 2004. She completed the degree Doctor of Musical Arts in Wind Band Conducting at the University of North Texas in 2007, under the supervision of Eugene Migliaro Corporon.

Angela has presented, guest conducted and adjudicated numerous wind bands in festivals and clinics throughout Canada, the United States, Germany, the Netherlands, Australia, China, South Korea and Thailand. She is a contributor in Canadian Winds, the national journal for wind band educators, and wrote chapters in twelve volumes of the Teaching Music through Performance in Band series, which profiles wind literature for all levels of instrumental instruction, published by GIA. Angela is also a contributor in the upcoming Canadian publication Winds of the North, which surveys Canadian wind band traditions and repertoire, and is also published by GIA.

Angela is in demand as a clinician for ensembles of all levels, and is passionate about music education, wind bands and wind conducting as an artistic and professional medium. Her students hold positions in post-secondary institutions, symphony orchestras and military bands across Canada. She holds positions on boards with the World Association of Symphonic Bands and Ensembles (WASBE), the College Band Directors National Association (CBDNA), and the Women Band Directors International – Alberta Chapter. She twice served as a board member for the Alberta Band Association, and volunteers for their events and fundraisers. Her greatest pride remains her two sons – both band students as well!
